My name is Heather Haxton and I have been a formal book binder/artisan for over ten years. I have always appreciated rare, old and finely crafted books. I have an extensive collection of American Literature, with some volumes dating back to the early 1800s. The oldest book in my family was bound in the 1500s.
With a literal love of books from my childhood and a degree in English, it only made sense that I would find such a unique and creative outlet in book binding. I have been "binding" since my college days with simple pamphlet binding for various projects and simple books. Long-stitch book binding is a far more complicated technique that brings out the true craftsmanship and artistry in my work.
The embroidery and applique patterns are taken from things I see in nature. The color combinations in all my work come from the four seasons, with summer and fall as my favorites. Through my travels in the Midwest and Southwest, I incorporate various shades and textures to recreate areas I have hiked, cycled and camped in.
I live in Phoenix, Arizona with my husband and enjoy everything the Southwest has to offer.
